Hula hoop outdoor play

Hula hoops are a terrific tool for promoting outdoor play, games, and creativity….

Children can jump in and out of the hula hoops and play hula hoop hopscotch…

My students rolled the hula hoops and played hula hoop relays through our Mini-500 race day obstacle course…

And hula hoops made great steering wheels to stimulate driving through our outdoor Mini-500 race day obstacle course! …

Hula hoops can also inspire a little outdoor creative play….

Like how about a hula hoop caterpillar? …

Just gather up a few sticks for antennae, arms, and feet….

And a few rocks for eyes and a mouth….

Some of the children decided their hula hoop caterpillars looked more like hula hoop caterpillar snowmen…

And yes, I know the tags are still on these hula hoops.  I kept forgetting to pull them off when we first started playing with the hula hoops but as you can see, the children didn’t seem to care either way…

What else did you do for your “Mini-500 Race Day?” It sure looks like fun!

Hi Heidi – I really meant to share a post on my 500 Day’s Activities but got kind of behind:) We made homemade icecream and sat outside to eat it. We set up a mini-500 track and held different kinds of little races. We explored checkered flags and made one of our own. And did some fun little activities around cars. I hope to post some of the ideas still but very sad that I didn’t get a post post up in time for the week of Indy 500:)

I have a really big yard and my kiddos (toddler/preschoolers) love for me to throw the hula hoops rolling across the yard and they chase them down, bring them back and we do it again. Will have to try some of your ideas here too. Thanks
