Adding a little math fun to our play with plastic eggs, I filled up a few of our plastic eggs with odds and ends from our math tokens we have collected this year…
We did this activity together as a large group. Each child started by selecting an egg off of the tray and then everyone began shaking their eggs…
Each of the children then took a turn to shake their egg so the rest of us could hear the sound it made and then all the children shouted out guesses as to what was inside the egg. After guesses were made, each child opened their egg and dumped the contents onto their tray so we could all see what was in the egg…
Once all the eggs were opened, the children counted how many items were in their eggs then put the contents back inside their eggs…
Then we reviewed the eggs only this time, I shook each egg and had the children listen and guess. The children did a great job remembering and identifying the contents of each egg based on the sound of each egg…
This was a great exercise in listening, guessing, recalling, and counting. The children enjoyed all aspects of this process – especially all the listening and guessing…
By letting the children touch and feel the items in their eggs, they were better able to recall what items were in the eggs when we went back through and listened to them again…

Great idea Sherri.
I do something similar with eggs. I place a small item in the eggs and give the children clues to guess what is inside.
One other idea is for the children to take an empty egg home and bring it back with something that they give clues about…they love it! And are totally excited that they get to keep such a simple thing a plastic egg!
I love the idea of sending the eggs home with the children – I would have loved to see what they would have chosen to fill the eggs up with!
Love this, Deborah! By the way, I am using your guestimation jar idea with my 3′s and they LOVE LOVE LOVE it! They want to do it over and over again, just like you said.
