Fill your classroom with opportunities to write!

I am a huge fan of inviting young children to write all throughout the day. In order to get my students writing all through out the day, I have to fill my classroom with opportunities to write.

On most days, the boards are filled with blank sheets of white paper but on some days, I design a game or provide a drawing prompt on the boards. The above writing prompt was set out on a day we were making both real and pretend pizzas for taking pizza orders. On the photo below, each child was invited to complete a friendship quilt by asking each of their friends to color in a square on the quilt.

But of course, providing blank sheets of paper for writing and drawing is a must do! My students love to take their clipboards all around the classroom throughout the day. Getting young children to want to write needs to be meaningful and fun!!!

Most of my students (ages 3 to 5) are not reading yet, but they are still able to make their marks, write most letter symbols, and almost all of the children can print their name. In the mornings, my students always sign-in on our sign-in board. We change up the sign-in sheet periodically throughout the school year, but the morning routine is always the same…

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
