There is nothing better than when a parent comes to preschool and reads their child’s favorite story to the class. In honor of Read Across America day, I want to share a little bit about our parent visitors and some of the terrific books they have been reading to the children…
The experience of having a parent come to read to the children is like none other. For the children, it is a very special time and a very, very big deal.  During the parent reading time, we try to keep things as laid back as possible so that the parent and child can relax, sit together, and enjoy the experience of reading to the other children just like they might do at home…
Of course, reading to a large group of children is a little different than reading one-on-one with a child but each of our parents have been able to make their own adjustments. If a little assistance is needed, Mrs. Courtney and I are there to lend a hand but our students have been so excited to have the parents come and read that we haven’t had to do much of anything but enjoy the experience too…
Each of our parents have their own style of reading aloud to the children which is part of what I love about this process. It is because each parent has his or her own style of reading that I think it is important for the parent and child to choose a book from home to read to the class. By bringing a favorite children’s book from home that the parent (and child) finds meaningful or fun or interesting, they will feel more comfortable and relaxed when reading that same book to the entire class…
I can’t express to you enough how amazing it has been to have our parents come and read to the children. While the parents are reading, I love to listen to the story too but mostly, I enjoy observing the interactions between the parents and their children and how proud and excited the children are to sit and read with their parents…
I don’t think you can get any higher recommendation for a reading list than those chosen by both a parent and child. Below is our most recent reading list for children ages 3 to 5. Oh and while these photos happen to only show moms reading to us, we also have dads come and read to us too.Â
Parent Picks…
Here are some of the books our parents and children have read to us this year. We will continue to have more parents reading to us over the next several week and I look forward to the favorite books they have to share!
