Sponge painted fish

This is a beautiful book written by Eric Carle and titled, “Mister. Seahorse.”  Like all of Eric Carle’s books,  this book has beautifully illustrated sea creatures and other ocean life throughout the book…

Each page of the book is interesting and the illustrations invite the children to ask lots of questions along the way…

After reading the book, the children spent time making a simple under-the-sea painting…

The children started off by painting with sponge-shaped fish on their paper…

I didn’t have any fish-shaped sponges on hand, so I simply cut out my own fish shapes from regular kitchen sponges…

Once the children were finished adding fish shapes to their paper, then they used our paint bottles to create seaweed. First they added blobs of black tempera paint to their paper…

The children added blobs of paint in various spots throughout the painting…

Then the children lifted up their papers to let the blobs drip down over the fish to create the seaweed similar to what we had seen in the book…

The bigger the blobs of black paint, the better the paint dripped down over the fish…

The children enjoyed making and watching their paint drip down on the paper but not every child actually understood the reasoning for the dripping but oh well, this part of the process was still interesting to the children…

And once the pictures all dried, I hung them up on our wall and together, they created a beautiful and colorful under the sea display…

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
