The 4 R’s: reading, writing, arithmetic, and rainbows

The things you can do with rainbows really are endless.

The prek children have been working on color words and we expanded our rainbow unit to cover reading, writing, and arithmetic…

Rainbow Reading

The prek children made this simple color word book to review their color words…

The goal of this process was to gather the colors of construction paper needed…

Organize the paper by color and size and then staple the paper to make a rainbow color word book….

Once the children completed their books, they used the color word cards to write each color word on the corresponding page of the color word book….

There will be other things we will do with our color word books later but for today, the goal was just to get them made….

Rainbow Writing

For writing practice, the children practiced writing in Styrofoam trays filled with a rainbow array of colors…

We did this process on several days and each time, we changed it up a bit but the basic idea is to start with a rainbow, made with lines of paint, on the Styrofoam tray….

Then use a tool (like a craft stick) to spread the paint across the tray…

Then use a tool (like a Q-tip or your finger) for writing on the rainbow colors of paint…

Then use another tool (like a cotton ball or craft stick) to wipe the lines from the paint and start writing again….

Some of our children elected to also make prints of the rainbows or the lines they made in the rainbows on half sheets of paper…

Other children just enjoyed exploring the rainbow paint and rainbow writing process….

Rainbow Arithmetic

For rainbow arithmetic, the children sorted plastic colors of plastic fruit and other objects onto rainbow colors of construction paper….

The children worked together to select items from the baskets in the center of the table and then match them to the correct color of the rainbow…

Once all the items were sorted, the children estimated how many items were on each color mat and counted the items on the color mats…

Lots of color throughout the classroom as we explored the 4 R’s!

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
