Building with blocks on the sticky easel

While I am on the subject of Sticky Easels, I thought I would share with you how one of my young boys decided he would use the sticky easel…

It was at the end of the day and I was preparing to take the contact paper off the easel when one of my little friends stopped by and wondered if our blocks would stick to the sticky easel….

I wasn’t sure but I was all for giving it a try!  Keep in mind, that the clear contact paper had been used all day for our other activities so some of the “sticky” wasn’t all that sticky anymore….

Well as you can see, it is possible to play with blocks on the easel.  My little friend continued to play and every once in awhile he would try something that wouldn’t work like trying to stick a long block to the easel like shown below. He quickly learned that the blocks would have to lay on their flat side or they would tumble to the floor…

Since some of the sticky was not all that good, he figured away around this problem as well….

He discovered that if he put the blocks on the very bottom where the contact paper was still quite sticky, he could just stack the blocks up on top of each other….

Of course, the blocks would only stack so high before they all came tumbling down which he thought was part of the fun. He would laugh out loud each time the blocks surprised him and tumbled to the ground….

These new discoveries all took place at the very end of our day so no one else had an opportunity to try this except this little guy.  Everyone else had already headed out to the pickup area to go home so I will replace the sticky and set the blocks out for another day of sticky easel play…

I am sure having a larger group of children play with the sticky easel will bring new dynamics to the block play – just as it does on the floor but I am curious to see how it goes!

Oh, and just as a side note, I have had these blocks out all year and up until recently, my students have pretty much ignored them but lately they have suddenly become the new toy of choice…

I also wanted to give a shout out to my teacher friend Scott because he often shares about the value of block play on his blog titled Brick by Brick and thought he would enjoy giving this a try too!

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'

Hearts at the easel

Of all the painting experiences I share with my students, the one they most enjoy is anything that has to do with painting at the easel.
