Green eggs and ham in preschool

In celebration of Dr. Seuss Birthday we made real green eggs (sorry but without the ham) in our pre-k class…

The children started out by listening to the story “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss…

Then the children helped their teacher whip up a batch of their own green eggs to try. Connecting the literature through cooking is a terrific way to create memories and celebrate the story…

Keep in mind that this was a very large class today and we were using a hot skillet for cooking so the teacher structured this activity carefully so everyone could be involved in some way. It was kind of like watching a cooking show. Sometimes the children sat back in chairs as the teacher explained what they were going to do and other times, the children all rushed to the table to take a closer look. This is only half the class taking a closer look right now…

Once the eggs and green food color were all in the bowl, the children took a turn stirring up the eggs…

Yep, it looked kind of disgusting:) Then the teacher poured the green egg mixture into the skillet…

While the eggs were cooking, the room smelled great! I wondered if the children would want to eat the eggs or not now that they were the color green…

Everyone was given a sample to try. I was brave enough to taste the green eggs too! isn’t funny how color can affect our appetite?

The majority of the children ate their eggs without hesitation! Some gave a small taste and there were just a few that didn’t try it at all…

Please note – always check for food allergies before serving any food items to children. And be sure to wash hands before participating!

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
