R is for rice in preschool

The children were exploring the letter "R" by gluing rice on the red letter... By gluing on the rice, the children are able to draw the connection of the sound of the letter "R" to something familiar, something they will remember, and something they can feel... The "R" shape was precut for the children so they could focus on the gluing experience and the texture experience... Rice is such a fun medium to explore... See [...]

P is for pink polk-a-dots in preschool

Each week, the teachers at our school continue to focus on a letter of the week. This isn't the only time that the children will explore a given letter but it is an opportunity to give a letter some special attention. This week the focus was on the letter P! I noticed that focusing on the letter of the week is also a time when children whose name starts with that letter get a little [...]

O is for Octopus in preschool

A drawback to being an administrator in a preschool program is that often times I have to actually "administrate" and when I do, it pulls me away from the classroom. So when this happens, I often only get to see what the children made after they are finished rather than while they are in the process. I still thought I would show you some of the terrific things our preschoolers made during our letter "O" week... The [...]

Hot cocoa activity box for preschool

I posted before on activity boxes we use in preschool and this week, for a little dramatic play and fine motor fun, our curriculum coordinator put together a cute little hot cocoa box... Inside the box is a baggy filled with scrunched up construction paper pieces for the hot cocoa mix. Some cotton balls for the marshmallows. Spoons and cups and "Hot Cocoa" counting cards. The idea is for the children to make their own [...]

The letter K is for kiss!

In the midst of preparing a Christmas musical, making holiday decorations, and making gifts for parents - we still try to keep up with our regular academic program. This week the children are exploring the letter K! It won't be the only time that we explore the letter K but it is the week that we emphasize the letter. To emphasize the sound of the letter, we tried kissing our K's! Lipstick was put on [...]

S is for sand and sensory

The children in this class spent time putting a little sand on their letter S today. First they brushed on a little glue... Then sprinkled on some sand... At first the children were using a bottle to sprinkle on the sand but we quickly changed the process by putting  the sand into little cups so they could use their fingers to sprinkle the sand on the letter S. As they sprinkled and smoothed out the [...]

Tactile letters (a to e) in preschool

To integrate the letter of the week with a sensory experience the children glue or paint something on each letter. Presenting the Letter A! A tactile experience is integrated to reinforce the sound of the letter as well as the shape of the letter...   Presenting the Letter B!     We try to make sure that the objects we use to glue to each letter actually start with the sound [...]
