Our collection of math tokens has gotten quite amazing this year. The children bring in anything from buttons, seashells, straws, bottle caps, erasers, and the list goes on. For today’s process, we selected a few of our math jars to set out along with printed number cards and a couple of wooden utensil trays…
The children began by selecting a number card and placing it in one column of the utensil tray….
Then the children counted out the corresponding number of math tokens to go next to the number they selected…
These utensil trays were purchased at our local Big Lots and this is just one example of how they can be used for math. My students enjoy fiddling with the different math tokens they brings from home and often will talk about the items they remember bringing as they explore any math process we use them for…
