If you are around a group of preschoolers long enough, you quickly learn that if you don’t want them to do something then just start your sentence with the word “Don’t!”. My preschoolers have a terrific sense of humor and they got a huge kick out of reading the book “Don’t Push the Button” by Bill Cotter…
“Don’t Push the Button” by Bill Cotter is a simply illustrated book about a monster who warns the reader not to push his button. Of course, even the little monster gets curious at what might happen if you push the button once, or perhaps two, or three times….
The book is interactive and invites the children to read-along and eventually to –Â push that button…
To have some extra fun, I put together a set of buttons for story book tokens for each of my students to use as a game and as a tool for discussion about the book when they got home. To make a button similar to the button shown in our book, I gathered up all my plastic lids then hot glued one red plastic lid to the center of a cardboard square for each child…
After we read the story, I gave each child one of my home-made push-buttons and we played our own version of “Don’t Push My Button!”…
We played with our buttons in several ways but the gist was I would say something like, “Don’t push your button or it will make you jump!” and then of course everyone would quickly push their button and start jumping…
Or I might say, “Don’t push your button or you might crawl or moo like a cow.” It didn’t take long before the children made up their own ideas for what might happen if we pushed our buttons…
Every child took their button home at the end of the day and one mom told me that her little guy took his button out at home and told his mom “Don’t push my button or I will go crazy!” Mom said “I feel that way daily!”
