Designing with Dominoes

Previously, I shared with you a couple of our domino math activities so today, I am sharing the creative side of playing with dominoes…

We had already talked about how dominoes have dots and each dot is placed strategically on a domino to help identify the number it represents.  I wouldn’t say that every child in the classroom totally understood this concept but all the children definitely understood that dominoes have dots. We also discovered that dominoes have texture. If you rub your fingers across the dots, you can feel the dots too…

To explore the domino texture (or dots) the children were invited to see if they could make domino designs by dipping a domino into paint then printing with the dominoes on their paper…

As the children made prints, they could see that the thicker the paint was, the harder it was to see the dots but if they kept printing without adding more paint, the dots would begin to appear…

As the children painted with their dominoes, they were able to make the choice to stick with one color or to add new colors of paint to their domino designs. The children could also choose a different domino to paint with to see if they could make a new set of dot prints…

Some of the children painted lots of colors randomly on their paper keeping their attention more on the dots than a design while others focused on where they wished to make their prints putting more emphasis on designing with their dominoes than on seeing the dots…

And other children took time to explore all the elements of this process from color, design, to dots…

Domino printing – a great idea! This would make a Great Wall for Humpty Dumpty or great bricks for the 3rd pigs house too!
