DIY pizza box kitchen

I have seen lots of really cool cardboard kitchens and have wanted to make one so I finally sat down and made my very own pizza box kitchen…

I don’t know about you but I don’t have a lot of space in my classroom and so I have to think “out of the box” in order to bring  all different types of play into my classroom…

To make the pizza box stove top/oven…

  • I cut out four red and four black circles from foam sticker sheets and stuck them to the top of the first pizza box for burners.
  • I painted arrows and lines on four wooden drawer knobs and screwed them into the front of the box.
  • I used yellow foam sticker sheets to add the words to my stove top.

I already had a small set of pots and pans, which I now store inside my pizza box stove top, and if the children want to open the lid and pretend it is an oven, they can do that too…

For the pizza box sink…

  • I cut a hole in the top of the second pizza box and put an aluminum cake pan inside the box to give it a silver looking sink.
  • I poked two more holes in the top of the box to slide a real kitchen faucet with handles then screwed them in place using the attachments that came with the faucet.
  • The faucet cost me $6.00 on clearance at Walmart last year.
  • The bottom legs of the faucet sit behind the aluminum pan so the pan does not slide around inside the box. Surprisingly, it all fit together like a glove.
  • I used duct tape around the inside edge of the sink to make it look more real too and to reinforce the edges a bit.
  • Of course, this sink is not waterproof so it would need to be just for pretend play.

After I completed the pizza box sink, I used packing tape to seal it closed so the faucet would stay in place but really, if the faucet came out, it would be super easy just to put it back in the box. I might even let my students take the whole thing apart one day to explore the inner workings of a faucet. For now, I wanted the focus to be on promoting dramatic play…

I can put my pizza box kitchen set just about anywhere and my toddler age grandson loves it just as much as my preschool age students do…

So now I have a fun DIY kitchen set to pull out for play on my coffee table at home…

Or to play with on a table in my classroom…

Or to even set out on my classroom bookshelf…

My students have been playing away with our new pizza box kitchen set!

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
