I am blessed to have one of our student’s grandmother, Mrs. T., volunteering some of her creative ideas, Â resources, and time with our class this year…
Mrs. T. led the children through a wonderful discussion on the topic of living and nonliving things and part of her discussion included the reading of this wonderful book titled “Are You Living?” by Lara Purdie Salas…
In addition, Mrs. T invited each child to reach inside her mystery box and pull out one object then decide if the object would be considered a living or nonliving thing…
To help the children consider whether the objects would be living or nonliving things, Mrs. T. would ask the children questions like…
- Does it need food to eat?
- Does it need water to drink?
- Does it grow?
Each object in the mystery box had a magnet hot glued on the back so the children could then place the objects on the magnetic board either on the living side of the board or the nonliving side of the board…
The children LOVED pulling out objects from the mystery box then deciding whether they were living or nonliving things…
We have lots more coming from Mrs. T. this year – what a blessing to have Mrs. T. share her talents and interest in science with us!
