Ants on a log counting and drawing game

During our study on ants, I shared this little DIY “ants on a log” counting game with the children then invited the children to draw their own ants on a log…

I made the “ants on a log game” as well as extra “logs” for the children to use by cutting up a couple of long dowel rods into smaller pieces and drawing ants on them…

During circletime, the children helped me count  and put the “ants on a log” in numerical order then I set the logs out during center time for the children to explore on their own.  I previously bought the dowel rods to use for rhythm sticks but decided I can simply paint over the ants when I am ready to make the rhythm sticks…

The children used black markers to add their own ants to their logs…

You may be wondering why we made ants on a log so I will tell you. Outside and around the back of our outdoor classroom is a very large pile of real wooden logs and the children had no problem finding lots of ants that live or crawl all over some of these wooden logs…

We set out some of our better wooden logs (one’s without the ants) to create an ant maze for the children to run through as well…

And they love it!

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
