“I Can Day” is a play on the word “can”
It’s a fun way to introduce the children to all the things they “can do” in preschool.
We began our day by reading the book, “All by Myself” by Aliki. Â This was a super simple book about a little boy who can get dressed, eat breakfast, go to school, come back home, and get ready for bed all by himself.
The book was a great introduction to “I Can Day” because it gave us a starting point to talk with the children about the things that they can do at home and at school too.
Using a can for action
After reading the book, we passed around our “I Can” can and each child pulled a special note out of the can which had one action word. Â I would read the note aloud by saying the child’s name in a sentence like this; Â “____ can jump, can you jump too?” Â And all the children would jump.
Other words in the can included; bend, twist, march, run, and kick. I had 12 words total so each child could pick a paper out of the can.
I also brought a bag of cans with me to circle time. Â As I took each can out of the bag, the children shouted out whether the can was taller or shorter and helped me figure out how to organize the cans from tallest to shortest.
We followed up our circletime with lots of other activities all related to cans and the things we can do in preschool. So stay tuned for more on “I Can Day” in my next post.
