Making craft stick xylophones in preschool

In my previous post, I shared with you our xylophone playing experience and xylophone science so today I want to share with you how we extended our xylophone extravaganza into the art experience as well…

To make our own craft stick xylophones, each child started by painting four to six large, wooden craft sticks any color they wished…

Once, the children had painted each craft stick, we left them sitting on a tray along with their name card to dry overnight…

The next day, and under supervision, the pre-k children took turns using the hot glue gun to glue their painted craft sticks to to a craft stick base…

Miss Abby helped complete all the remaining xylophones…

This is a completed xylophone. The children borrowed the mallets from our store bought xylophones to play their homemade xylophones…

The craft stick xylophones don’t sound quite the same as the store bought xylophones but the children enjoyed taking home their very own xylophone in the end regardless of sound…

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
