In my previous post, I shared with you our activity to go with the book “The Grouchy Ladybug” by Eric Carle and today, I want to share with you our tissue paper caterpillars that go very nicely with the book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle.
This is a fun book about a caterpillar who eats its way through all kinds of fruits and veggies…
Then is transformed into a beautiful butterfly…
To extend our reading of this book, the children created tissue paper caterpillars. The table was all set up with cups of watered down glue, paint brushes, and red and green tissue paper ovals…
I left the book on the art table so the children could refer to the illustrations on the book to see how Eric Carle created his caterpillar…
To make the caterpillars, the children brushed glue on their paper then placed the tissue paper on top of the glue. Then the children brushed a second coat of glue on top of the tissue paper shapes…
If a shape started to fold over, I demonstrated how to add another piece of tissue paper on top of the folded piece and then use more glue again…
The children did a wonderful job with their caterpillars and after they were completed, we set them aside to dry overnight…
The next day, the children added a face, antennae and legs to their caterpillars…
This process was a terrific process for the children to try. I would like to do more with this process next year…

That’s awesome Linda! I saw this activity online a few months ago and could not for the life of me find where I saw it tonight!! Anyway, we used it as part of our Mother’s Day party – I just love them!
I think I saw it originally on Pinterest. We’ve done it a few years in a row now. It just blew me away that you did it at the same time lol
Great minds think alike, huh? 
My oldest daughter loves The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We will have to make a tissue paper caterpillar!
What a cute craft for a great book. We will have to give this a try.
