Your children will love this Eric Carle inspired activity!
In my previous post, I shared with you our activity to go with the book “The Grouchy Ladybug” by Eric Carle and today, I want to share with you our tissue paper caterpillars that go very nicely with the book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle.
About the Book
This is a fun book about a caterpillar who eats its way through all kinds of fruits and veggies…
Then is transformed into a beautiful butterfly…
Expanding on the Story
To extend our reading of this book, the children created tissue paper caterpillars. The table was all set up with cups of watered down glue, paint brushes, and red and green tissue paper ovals…
I left the book on the art table for inspiration so the children could refer to the illustrations on the book to see  how Eric Carle created his caterpillar…
The Creative Process
To make the caterpillars, the children brushed glue on their paper then placed the tissue paper on top of the glue. Â Then the children brushed a second coat of glue on top of the tissue paper shapes…
If a shape started to fold over, I demonstrated how to add another piece of tissue paper on top of the folded piece and then use more glue again…
The children did a wonderful job with their caterpillars and after they were completed, we set them aside to dry overnight…
Adding Details
The next day, the children added a face, antennae and legs to their caterpillars…
Why we Love this Process
This was a terrific process for the children to explore and apply what they learned from the story. We love Eric Carle and the inspiration the story provided for our own colorful and unique caterpillar creations!
