A National Screen-Free Week checklist

April 30th through May 6th is being presented by CCFC (Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood) as national Screen-Free Week. According to CCFC, Screen Free Week is…

“Screen-Free Week is a national celebration where children, families, schools, and communities spend several days turning off entertainment screen media and turning on life. It’s a time to unplug and play, read, daydream, create, explore, and spend time with family and friends.” (CCFC)

Make yourself a screen-free checklist

In order to have a successful screen-free week, you first have to recognize how integrated technology is in your life. Here is a little checklist for you to assess the screens you use in your home or classroom…

How to use the Screen-Free Checklist with your child

1. Walk around your house or classroom and make a list of each item with a screen (television, computer, lap top, cell phone, toys, games, smart board…)

2. For each item on your list, help your child come up with a simple activity that he or she can do to replace the screen time (read a book, take a walk, build a block tower, paint a picture…)

3. Through out the week, refer back to the list and each time your child “turns off a screen” and “turns on life” – then give your child a check!

Note to Parents

Your child’s screen-free week will be more successful if the whole family will get involved. Make a checklist for the entire family to use throughout the week.

Teach Preschool Screen-Free Time

I have been posting about my classroom all school year and I can use a little screen-free time for myself too! I have much to do to finish up our school year and I really need to clean my house!

I decided that the best way to give myself a little screen-free time is to spend part of this week sharing about some of the things my grandson and I have already been doing to get out from behind the screen turn off the screen and play :).

These posts will be simple for me to share and hopefully, you will find this series of posts inspirational as you look for ways to spend time with your child “turning off the screen” and  “turning on life” through out the week!

Have a Great Week!

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
