Seeded playdough sensory play

As I have already mentioned before, there really are so many ways you can incorporate seeds into all content areas of your classroom…

To add a little seed into our sensory play, I made some uncooked homemade playdough. To make the homemade playdough, I used…

  • 1 cup of salt
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 2 tablespoons of Cream of Tartar
  • 11/2 Cups of boiling water
  • 2 tablespoons of oil
  • Food color (optional)  –  I didn’t add any to this batch!

I mixed all of the ingredients together in a bowl and stirred together – then kneaded the dough until it looked and felt like playdough!

Each child started out by forming a  ball of white playdough into a bowl or kind of like a nest to hold their seeds….

Then the children poured a few seeds into their bowl…

Once they had added seed to the ball of playdough, the children simply began to knead the seed into the dough and then play with it any way they wished…

We used different kinds of seed so after a bit, the children shared pieces of playdough with each other so they could feel the different kinds of seeded playdough…

We noticed that the seeds didn’t always stay in the playdough but we didn’t care. The children used their hands to roll the playdough and their fingers to poke the seeds into the playdough or to pluck seeds out of the playdough…

And after awhile, the children requested additional playdough toys to explore the playdough. So I pulled out our basket of playdough toys to let them explore some more…

We kept the playdough for a few more days of play but then I threw it away. The added seeds didn’t make the playdough so great for saving very long…

The seeded playdough was an excellent tool for sensory play, fine motor development, texture, comparing and contrasting, and conversation about the different types of seeds…

By integrating seeds into our sensory play, the children were able to literally get a feel for the differences in each type of seed…

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
