Counting and planting seeds

We are continuing our exploration of seeds and today we examined how seeds grow. We started off by reading the delightful children’s book “Ten Seeds” by Ruth Brown…

Here’s a glimpse of how your students can plant their own seeds!

While reading the book, we counted 10 seeds of our own…

The book starts off with 10 seeds that are planted in the ground but as we take a picture walk through each page we examine what happens to each seed or plant.  One by one, the seeds and plants start to disappear…

And as we discover that each plant or seed has either been removed or stepped on, we also remove a seed from our trays and count how many we still have left…

And before long, we discover there are no more seeds on our board…

But we discover that new seeds start to appear so we can start all over again!

And now that we have counted all of our seeds, we go off to explore a little seed planting fun on our own. The children played with the seeds in their own little box of dirt…

And while playing, each child set aside one seed and planted it in a cup so we can watch it grow…

We wonder how long it will take for our seeds to grow!

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
