Let your preschoolers press here!

in Children's Books, Press Here

After reading a little post shared by Creative Connections for Kids about the new book titled, “Press Here” by Herve Tullet, I just had to rush out and pick up a copy for our class…

As I read each page, I invited each child in our class to take a turn “press” or “shake” the book….

This book is just about as simple as it gets and yet it is like magic when you watch the kids laugh in delight as the dots move around each page.  I am quite certain some of the children thought that they actually made the dots move as we went along in our reading of the book…

By the end of the book, the children all clap to make the dots grow bigger. This is when the whole class gets to jump in and join the fun all at once…

We followed up the reading of this book by making our own “press here” cards…

The children put one yellow sticker on the outside of their cards (like the cover of the book) then put a variety of stickers on the inside of their cards……

After they finished their cards, they brought them over to me so I could “press the button” and see where the dots all went inside the card…

Each time I pressed a dot, I would act so surprised as to how the dot mysteriously changed inside their books. I heard lots of giggles and “Mrs. Stewart – Press my book!”…

This was a wonderful way to introduce a very simple book making process based on a real book…

And it was wonderful to see some of the children interacting with each other as they “read” or “pressed” the dots on each other’s books…

And before we wrapped it all up, we used our sticker dots for a little math activity as well…

Super fun book to read together!

I love the book activity Deborah, I’m going to add this to my Pinterest board for future reference. “Press Here” is amazing and magical but the children’s response is priceless!

We just got this one out of the library; what a fun book! I love your idea for the follow up… We are definitely going to try something like that this week!

Hi Deborah,

I love your Web site and ideas, but as my daughter gets older I wonder if you know of a similar (and hopefully, equally excellent) Web site geared to the kindergarten crowd. Thanks, and keep up all the great work.

Sharon

Hi Sharon,
Well every blog is different and the older blogs tend to be more classroom oriented (at least the ones I follow) but let me see if I can send you some links to check out. I will email you soon.

That’s a really great book! I think that my class could make their own too when we work on the word “here.” That would be a good motivator to have them write it lots of times!
I may have to have parents donate some extra stickers, though!

Hi Deborah , Did you know that your blog is being read way over here in New Zealand? I am a Kindergarten Teacher teaching ages 3-5 years. I eagerly read your blog in my inbox every day ! I especially loved the blog about the book, Press Here.
