In the News: Telling a story right out of the bag in preschool

We have been doing some more exploring with story telling. I recently shared with you how to make story stones and this week, I had the pleasure of going on Indiana Fox 59 Morning News to share other ways to promote story telling.

This week we told stories using a story telling bag

To begin, we had the children collect things from around the room to put in our bag. Each child chose one object and dropped it into the bag…

The children then took a turn taking something out of the bag and setting it on the floor in front of the group…

As each object is taken out of the bag, we use that object to help tell our story. Telling stories is not easy for young children so one way to help young children participate is by giving the children a starter sentence such as “Along came a horse and he ate a….” Each time a new object gets pulled out of the bag – then that object eats the next one.  The horse ate the apple -the apple ate the police car – and so on.   It doesn’t have to make sense at this point – it is about building connections with the objects and helping children think ahead as to what they will say when it is their turn….

Once, all the items are out of the bag, you can sequence the items in order of your story; “What came first in our story? What came next?”

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
