Spring up your preschool classroom with pussy willows!

The children made pussy willows in preschool today!

They started out by exploring a real pussy willow. We had to be careful because if we handled the branch too much the little buds (catkins) would fall of the branch very easily. So instead we took one of the catkins off and let the children feel it instead….

Each class, depending on the age, first made a branch by painting a brown/white/glue mixture on their paper…

The class I observed making the pussy willows was a threes class…

They used thicker brushes and some of the children really liked that brown paint…

Once they finished making their branches, they added cotton balls for the catkins…

Since their was glue added to the paint mixture, the cotton balls would stick to the paint once everything dries.

This two’s class made their pussy willows a little differently. They used their finger tips to paint their branches and catkins…

This fours class used crayons to draw their branches then spread apart the cotton balls a bit to glue on the branches…

And some of the fours also used their finger tips to make the branches and catkins…

I love how each class interprets an idea in their own way!

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
