Making your own fishing poles for preschool

Fishing poles can be made in many ways and can be used for all kinds of preschool activities.  This fishing pole is simply a dowel rod that I painted then taped on a length of yarn.

At the end of the yarn, I added a small, but strong, magnet wrapped in a thin piece of material.

To go with each fishing pole is a cloth carrier. By storing each pole in a carrier, I don’t have to worry about the magnets and strings of the poles getting all tangled between uses. It makes for much easier hauling and storing.

The poles just slide right into the little pouches and then I tie the ends to keep them from sliding out until I need them again.

Things to think about

1. When you make a fishing pole – don’t make the rod too long. My rods are actually a bit too long and need cut down.

2. Be sure to sand any rough ends or edges.

3. Use a strong magnet that will pick up a paper clipped fish or item easily.

4. Use thick yarn or cord so the yarn doesn’t get tangled all the time and is easy to untangle when needed.

Every time I think I know everything I need to know about teaching young children, God says, "Hold on a minute!" and gives me a new challenge.

Let me tell ya...

With each new challenge that you overcome, you will find yourself better equipped and more passionate about teaching young children.

God didn't call wimps to lead, teach, or care for His children. Nope, he has high expectations, so get ready. You will have to give your very best but after teaching for over 30 years, I can tell you that it is a wonderful and rewarding journey.

Whenever your calling feels hard, just remember, 'He who began a good work in you (and in the children you serve) will be faithful to complete it.'
